Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of challenges, from managing stress and anxiety to addressing deeper emotional struggles or trauma. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or if you’re seeking greater self-awareness and healing, therapy is a good option.
In therapy, you’ll have a space to talk openly about what’s on your mind. Patients are encouraged to speak about their inner world without filtration, hesitation, or fear of judgment. The psychologist will listen, ask questions, and help guide the conversation to help you explore past experiences, current challenges, and unconscious patterns that may be influencing your thoughts and behavior.
The length of therapy depends on your individual goals and the challenges you're working through. Some people may benefit from a few months of therapy, while others may engage in longer-term work. The process is flexible and can be adjusted to your needs, and we will routinely revisit your goals and regularly assess your progress.
Healing and self-discovery are gradual processes. It’s normal to experience some discomfort or emotional intensity as you begin to confront difficult feelings or experiences. Progress in therapy isn’t always linear, but trust that even when things feel challenging, the work you’re doing is leading to deeper understanding and change.
Patients typically begin with weekly sessions, though the frequency can vary depending on your needs. Some people may choose to come more frequently. Regular attendance in therapy is a critical part of the therapeutic process.
Nissen Psychology PC is an out of network provider, but you may still have coverage through your insurance carrier’s out of network benefits. This means you pay for the session upfront and your insurance may reimburse you a portion of the cost. It’s a good idea to contact your insurance provider beforehand. We are happy to provide you with a “superbill” (a detailed receipt) for insurance submission. A limited number of reduced fee (sliding scale) patients are admitted to the clinic based on financial need. Contact the office for specifics.
We offer in-person and virtual appointments evenings and weekends. We are conveniently located at 2500 Nesconset Hwy, Bldg 5D Stony Brook, NY 11790

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 631-804-6937.
